19-0914-SSE-E – Noticing: using noticing activities to develop language and skills

In this practical workshop, we shall look at an approach to teaching and learning called noticing. This is based on the learners first being made aware of examples of language (or aspects of skills) from texts that they read or hear, followed by closer focus on the elements of the language (or sub-skill), and finally by activation of this language or sub-skill.
We shall look at how to introduce and run noticing activities in class, and how they can eventually be handed over to the learners themselves in order to increase their independence and autonomy.
We shall also develop some noticing activities both with a language focus (grammar, vocabulary, functional exponents) and also with a skills focus (speaking, writing).
Noticing works at all levels, though naturally tends to be somewhat limited at A1. We shall work mainly at B1 and B2, but this is flexible and can be adapted to the interests of the group.
Please bring a copy of your course book(s) so that you can also work with material relevant to your own classes.
