22-1210-SSE-E – Analysing modal and semi-modal verbs
In this fourth grammar workshop for teachers, we’ll look at modal auxiliary verbs and their functional uses in English. We’ll include consideration of such concepts as epistemic and root modality, and extrinsic and intrinsic meanings of modals.
In addition, we’ll look at the so-called “semi-modals” and contrast these with true modals. We’ll also explore other contrasts such as shall vs will, must vs have to, and need vs need to.
Additionally, we’ll look at ways of introducing and practising the various modals (and “semi-modals”) in class, using a range of approaches and activities, at a range of levels.
We’ll especially focus on uses that can cause problems for learners, and you as participants will be able to determine the agenda for the workshop as far as practicable so that your specific questions/issues can be addressed.
